UT Martin Pre-Med Scholars

Shadowing is one of the most important steps on a student’s journey to medical school. Not only do most medical schools expect applicants to have knowledge of the field through pre-medical experiences such as shadowing, but it also helps confirm students’ commitment to the path of medicine. The UT Martin Pre-Med Scholars Program will help students obtain some of those experiences.

The UT Martin Pre-Med Scholars Program is primarily a two-year shadowing program designed to give students an inside look into the field of medicine. Once accepted into the program, Scholars are assigned a different physician each month during the academic year and guaranteed a minimum of four hours of shadowing with each assigned physician. Students shadow a variety of specialties including: emergency medicine, general surgery, family medicine, gynecology and obstetrics, nephrology, orthopedics, and pediatrics.

In addition to shadowing, students participate in a mock MCAT every spring. Moreover, thanks to generous donors, the program sponsors two students to take a Princeton Review MCAT course.

One cohort of approximately ten students is accepted each fall and shadowing typically begins in October. To be eligible to apply, students must:

Be of at least sophomore standing
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Have taken one biology and one chemistry or two chemistry courses
Have received grades of B or better in your most recent biology and chemistry courses
Have a recommendation from a UT Martin faculty member
